It was bound to happen sooner or later — a building named for Alex Ovechkin. There are now plans to build the Alexander Ovechkin International Hockey Academy in Moscow. According to the website of the mayor and the government of Moscow, the construction of the Academy is being financed by private investment.

Maxim Gaman, head of the department of city property, spoke about the project.

“The Department of City Property provided the Alexander Ovechkin International Hockey Academy LLC with a five-year lease of a land plot without bidding. During this time, an ice arena building with an area of more than 20 thousand square meters will be erected in Khoroshevo-Mnevniki, as well as a complex of temporary residence of athletes with a recovery and rehabilitation center.”

The ice complex for this academy will be built on Nizhniye Mnevniki Street as part of the project. The site area will be three hectares and the rink itself – more than 43 thousand square meters. [Note: 1 hectare = 2.471 acres; 1 hectare also equals 100 ares or 10,000 square meters]

Roman Mironchik, general director of the company building the Alexander Ovechkin International Hockey Academy, noted that the academy’s main purpose will be to develop young hockey players. The facility will also provide at least 200 new jobs.

The design of the complex is currently in progress, with construction beginning before the end of this year.
