The 18-year-old defenseman had one shot on goal and three takeaways in 20:37 of ice time.

“I think I played solid game,” Nemec said. “Sometimes I made some mistakes, but it wasn’t bad for first game. I think I was good in the defensive zone and I was a little bit surprised (by that), but it can be better.”

Vitek Vanecek made 13 saves over the first two periods in his Devils debut after being acquired in a trade with the Washington Capitals on July 8. Vancecek signed a three-year, $10.2 million contract ($3.4 million average annual value) July 19.

Akira Schmid stopped all 11 shots he faced in the third period for New Jersey.

Nikita Soshnikov scored for the Islanders. Ilya Sorokin allowed three goals on 12 shots in 29:55, and Cory Schneider made 13 saves in relief.

Soshnikov gave New York a 1-0 lead at 8:04 of the first period, but Yegor Sharangovich (15:24) and Dougie Hamilton (16:42) responded with goals 1:18 apart later in the period to make it 2-1.

Jack Hughes gave the Devils a 3-1 lead 52 seconds into the second period, and Erik Haula scored at 17:48 for the 4-1 final.

Red Wings 6, Penguins 2: Dominik Kubalik scored twice for the Detroit Red Wings in a 6-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

Kubalik, a forward, signed a two-year contract with the Red Wings ($2.5 million AAV) on July 13.

Filip Zadina had a goal and an assist, and Victor Brattstrom stopped 19 of 20 shots in 30:36 for Detroit in its first preseason game. Sebastian Cossa made 12 saves in relief.

Brock McGinn and Bryan Rust scored for the Penguins. Tristan Jarry allowed four goals on 14 shots in 28:24, and Casey DeSmith made five saves in relief.

McGinn gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead at 1:42 of the first period, but Kubalik tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 15:42.

Zadina scored 23 seconds into the second period to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead, and goals by Elmer Soderblom (5:01) and Steven Kampfer (power play at 6:55) 1:54 apart later in the period made it 4-1.

Rust scored to make it 4-2 at 13:16 of the second, but Tyler Spezia gave Detroit a 5-2 lead 2:34 into the third period.

Kubalik scored shorthanded for his second goal of the game at 10:20 to make it 6-2.

Sabres 2, Flyers 1: Brandon Biro scored two goals to help the Buffalo Sabres to a 2-1 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at KeyBank Center in Buffalo.

Craig Anderson started and made eight saves on nine shots in 30:02 for Buffalo. Malcolm Subban made 12 saves in relief.

Travis Konecny scored for Philadelphia. Troy Grosenick made 12 saves on 14 shots over the first two periods. Samuel Ersson made seven saves in the third period.

Biro scored on a shot from the slot at 8:24 of the first period to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead.

Konecny tied it 1-1 on a breakaway at 14:42, but Biro scored again at 8:57 of the second period for the 2-1 final.

Hurricanes 5, Lightning 1: Paul Stastny scored, and Dylan Coghlan had three assists in their debut with the Carolina Hurricanes, a 5-1 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, in the preseason opener for each team.

Stastny signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Hurricanes on Aug. 23; Coghlan was acquired with forward Max Pacioretty in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights on July 13.

Andrei Svechnikov had a goal and an assist, Jesperi Kotkaniemi had two assists, and Frederik Andersen made 20 saves for Carolina.

Vladislav Namestnikov scored, and Maxime Lagace made 41 saves for Tampa Bay.

Svechnikov (11:50) and Stastny (15:46) each scored a power-play goal in the second period when the Hurricanes opened a 2-0 lead.

Sebastian Aho made it 3-0 at 4:57 of the third period, and Seth Jarvis extended the lead to 4-0 off a pass from Svechnikov at 6:29.

Namestnikov cut it to 4-1 at 11:42, but Malte Stromwall scored on the power play at 18:23 for the 5-1 final.

The Hurricanes went 3-for-5 with the man-advantage; the Lightning were 0-for-2.

The Lightning announced Monday that they were postponing their preseason games against the Hurricanes on Wednesday and the Nashville Predators on Thursday at Amalie Arena in Tampa because of the potential effects of Hurricane Ian. They will instead play the Predators at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Thursday.

Bruins 3, Rangers 2 (OT): A.J. Greer scored his second goal 1:12 into overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers at TD Garden in Boston.

Jack Studnicka had two assists for Boston, and Jeremy Swayman made 24 saves.

Adam Fox and Alexis Lafreniere scored, and Jimmy Vesey had two assists for New York. Jaroslav Halak made 14 saves on 15 shots in the first 32:46, and Louis Domingue made 19 saves on 21 shots in relief.

Fox scored at 7:03 of the first period to give New York a 1-0 lead. Vincent Trocheck had the primary assist in his Rangers debut.

Greer tied it 1-1 at 5:01 of the second period, but Lafreniere scored off a scramble in front to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 7:17.

Oskar Steen tied it 2-2 for the Bruins with a shorthanded goal at 6:40 of the third period.

Jets 5, Senators 3: Daniel Torgersson scored twice for the Winnipeg Jets in a 5-3 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg.

Torgersson, a second-round pick (No. 40) by the Jets at the 2020 NHL Draft, gave them a 1-0 lead at 13:55 of the first period, then put them in front 3-2 at 15:11 of the second period.

Kyle Connor had a goal and two assists, and Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves for Winnipeg.

Tyler Motte and Shane Pinto each had goal and an assist for Ottawa. Mads Sogaard made eight saves in 29:48, and Kevin Mandolese allowed four goals on 15 shots in relief.

Cole Reinhardt tied it 1-1 for the Senators at 14:35 of the first, and Motte gave them a 2-1 lead at 7:40 of the second.

Michael Eyssimont scored on the power play for the Jets at 13:44 of the second to tie it 2-2 before Torgersson’s second goal of the game less than two minutes later.

Ville Heinola‘s power-play goal at 19:10 of the second gave Winnipeg a 4-2 lead, but Pinto scored 26 seconds later to cut it to 4-3 at 19:36.

Connor scored at 8:10 of the third period for the 5-3 final.

Stars 4, Coyotes 3 (OT): Mason Marchment scored his second goal of the game at 1:42 of overtime to lift the Dallas Stars to a 4-3 win against the Arizona Coyotes at BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Marchment, who signed a four-year contract with the Stars ($4.5 million AAV) on July 13, also scored at 2:35 of the second period to give Dallas a 3-2 lead.

Joel Kiviranta had a goal and an assist, and Radek Faksa had two assists for the Stars. Scott Wedgewood made 10 saves.

Shayne Gostisbehere, Nick Bjugstad and Vladislav Kolyachonok scored for the Coyotes. Ivan Prosvetov allowed three goals on 20 shots, and Jon Gillies made four saves in relief.

Kiviranta assisted on Ryan Shea‘s goal at 14:18 of the first period that gave Dallas a 1-0 lead, then put them back in front when he scored shorthanded 1:22 into the second to make it 2-1.

Gostisbehere’s power-play goal with five seconds left in the first tied it 1-1, and Bjugstad scored with the man-advantage at 1:59 of the second to make it 2-2.

Kolyachonok tied it 3-3 with a shorthanded goal at 11:50 of the third period.

Blues 4, Blackhawks 1: The Chicago Blackhawks lost Luke Richardson’s first game as an NHL coach, 4-1 to the St. Louis Blues at United Center in Chicago.

Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and two assists, Brayden Schenn had two assists, and Jordan Binnington stopped 20 of 21 shots playing the first two periods for St. Louis, which scored three power-play goals. Vadim Zherenko made 11 saves.

The Blues have won their first three preseason games.

Cole Guttman scored, and Petr Mrazek made nine saves on 10 shots for Chicago in its preseason opener before being replaced midway through the second period by Alex Stalock (nine saves). Each goalie was making his Blackhawks debut; Mrazek was acquired in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 7, and Stalock agreed to a one-year, $750,000 contract July 14.

O’Reilly put the Blues ahead 1-0 on the power play at 2:23 of the first period, one-timing a Schenn pass in the slot.

Guttman, playing his first NHL game, tied it 1-1 with 1:08 left in the second period on a one-timer in front.

Justin Faulk gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead at 8:57 of the third period with a power-play goal, and Griffin Luce extended it to 3-1 at 11:59.

Nikita Alexandrov‘s power-play goal at 16:55 made it a 4-1 final.

Blues defenseman Scott Perunovich left the game late in the first with an upper-body injury after being hit along the boards by Blackhawks forward Michal Teply.

Wild 5, Avalanche 2: Tyson Jost scored two power-play goals for the Minnesota Wild in a 5-2 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena in Denver.

Nic Petan had a goal and an assist, Sam Steel and Matt Boldy each had two assists, and Filip Gustavsson, who was acquired in a trade with the Ottawa Senators for goalie Cam Talbot on July 12, allowed two goals on 28 shots in 30:16 in his Minnesota debut. Zane McIntyre made 13 saves in relief.

Martin Kaut had a goal and an assist, Charles Hudon had two assists, and Pavel Francouz made 21 saves for Colorado.

Alex Newhook gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead 19 seconds into the first period, but Jost scored at 6:08 and 15:48 to give the Wild a 2-1 lead.

Minnesota was 3-for-8 on the power play, Colorado was 0-for-5.

Martin Kaut tied it 2-2 20 seconds into the second period, but the Wild scored three times in the final 5:11. Petan’s power-play goal at 14:49 made it 3-2 before Vladislav Firstov (17:21) and Brandon Duhaime (19:50) each scored for the 5-2 final.
