Middlebury To Celebrate 100 Years Of Men’s Ice Hockey

The Middlebury Athletics Department will begin its celebrations of 100 years of men’s ice hockey when the 2022-23 season begins next month. 

CELEBRATION TIMELINE

  • The department had a custom logo created to mark the occasion (photo above), which will be on the ice and on the jerseys and helmets worn by the team.
  • Middlebury will be sharing a feature story and video over the winter to continue celebrating the 100 years of the program.
  • Men’s ice hockey players Mark Spence ’98 and Matt Dunn ’02 will be inducted into the Middlebury Athletics Hall of Fame on November 5. Many alumni will return to join in celebrating their accomplishments.
  • The program will welcome many Panthers back for Alumni Weekend on January 27-28, 2023, when the team hosts Connecticut College (Friday) and Tufts (Saturday).
  • The program plans to culminate the year-long celebration from September 22-24, 2023. More information on this in-person event will be sent at a later date.

 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Middlebury men’s hockey tradition is as old as the game, with club play dating back to the 1860s. 
  • The Panthers have enjoyed tremendous successes since the men’s varsity program began in the 1922-23 season.  
  • Middlebury won the school’s first NCAA Championship in 1995. This was the second year the Panthers were permitted to play in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Middlebury earned a 302-46-20 (.848) record with 12-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (1995-2007). During the span, the Panthers won a record five-straight national titles from 1995 through 1999.
  • The Panthers put together another string of national titles from 2004 through 2006, capturing three-consecutive crowns to run its total to eight overall. 
  • Middlebury has also won eight NESCAC Championships and boasts nearly 50 All-American selections.

The Panthers will begin the 2022-23 campaign on Friday, November 18 with a home NESCAC contest against Colby.
