HOUGHTON — With a split last weekend, the Michigan Tech Huskies hockey team had a strong showing on the road at Bowling Green State. On Friday, the Huskies scored a goal in each period en route to a 3-2 win, their first CCHA victory of the season. Saturday, they struggled to repeat the things they did well on Friday, falling 6-1.

With the split, the Huskies improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. As they enter the second weekend of November, they have a run of 10 more CCHA contests before they face another non-conference opponent at the Great Lakes Invitational.

Getting their first conference win

Friday night, the Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead 14:11 into the contest when senior forward Parker Saretsky scored his fourth goal of the season, briefly giving him the team lead. The fourth-year skater has nine points on the season in just nine games, which is the most he has had since his freshman year, when he scored five goals and 17 points in 36 games.

The Falcons evened the game at 9:11 of the second period. The game remained tied until Adam Pitters took a major penalty for charging, giving the Huskies a major power play.

On the advantage, assistant captain Ryland Mosley found the back of the net at 16:16.

For Mosley, the goal was his fourth of the season. Through nine games, he has four goals and 10 points to lead the Huskies in scoring. His four goals are one short of his career high of five from last year.

Mosley’s goal was the only one the Huskies scored on the major power play. Unfortunately, they also surrendered one shorthanded at 17:57, evening the game after two periods.

In the third, senior center Logan Ganie broke the tie with a goal at 6:04. For Ganie, the goal was his second point of the night, as he assisted on Saretsky’s goal earlier in the evening.

Saretsky had the second assist on Ganie’s goal.

Senior goaltender Blake Pietila made 41 saves to help earn the win.

Good start, tough finish Saturday

The Huskies started well on Saturday, with sophomore defenseman Trevor Russell opening the scoring at 14:09 of the opening frame. Ganie picked up his third point of the weekend on the goal.

From there, however, the Falcons took control of the contest, scoring the game’s next six goals, including three on the power play, where the Huskies had been near perfect coming into the contest.

Scouting the Lakers

This weekend, the Huskies host the Lake Superior State Lakers for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. The Huskies beat the Lakers in an exhibition game to open the season, 5-2, back on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Since then, the Lakers have gotten off to a slow start, dropping a game to Nebraska-Omaha, two to Michigan, one to Clarkson, and two to Northern Michigan. They are 1-6-1 overall, and 0-2 in CCHA play.

However, their schedule has been tough, even though all those games were played at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie.

Senior Louis Boudon leads the Lakers in scoring with four goals and eight points in eight games. The Huskies kept him off the board during the exhibition game earlier this season, and they will need to contain him again this weekend to have success.

Senior forward Brandon Puricelli has also been good, with three goals and five points through eight games.

On the blue line, junior Jacob Bengtsson has been good at pushing the puck up the ice. He has a team-high five assists through eight games.

In goal, senior Seth Eisele has struggled, appearing in six contests and sporting a 4.10 goals against average with a .882 save percentage. Sophomore Easton Hesse has been slightly better, but neither has had the kind of start a coach wants to this point.

Game times

Friday’s game between the Huskies and Lakers is set to start at 7:07 p.m. at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Saturday’s opening faceoff is set for 6:07 p.m.
