Thiesing Hat Trick Leads No. 12 Buckeyes to 4-1 Win at LIU – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Cam Thiesing notched his first career hat trick as the No. 12 Ohio State men’s hockey team defeated Long Island University, 4-1, Saturday in East Meadow, N.Y. The Buckeyes were down 1-0 after the first period before a Thiesing natural hat trick gave Ohio State the lead. Jake Wise assisted on all three Thiesing tallies. Patrick Guzzo added a goal in the third for the 4-1 final.

Next up for the Buckeyes, now 9-6-1 on the year, is a two-game Big Ten series at Penn State next weekend. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday in State College, Pa., with the games streamed through Big Ten Plus and on Ohio State Radio.

OSU 4, LIU 1 – How it Happened

  • The Sharks scored the only goal of the first period. Ohio State turned the puck over trying to start the rush on the power play, with Anthony Vincent getting to the puck and scoring unassisted at 15:58. Shots were 11-10 in favor of LIU in the first.
  • Cam Thiesing and Jake Wise combined for three goals in the second.
  • Thiesing’s first goal came on the power play at 5:34. Wise led Thiesing behind the defense and he beat the goalie far side. Mason Lohrei started the play up the ice and had the second assist.
  • Thiesing put the Buckeyes in the lead at 11:44, taking a pass from Wise, turning and scoring from the faceoff circle. Tyler Duke also assisted on the tally.
  • Thiesing’s third goal was a highlight reel score. Michael Gildon threw the puck down low and Thiesing gathered near the net, came around and scored a lacrosse style goal at 18:14. Wise started the play for his third assist of the night.
  • Ohio State had the lead in shots, 13-2, in the second.
  • The lone goal in the third came from Patrick Guzzo, as he redirected a pass from Matt Cassidy right in front on the rush. Joe Dunlap started the play up ice, with the goal at 5:56.
  • Shots were 13-4 in favor of the Buckeyes in the third.
  • For the game, Ohio State outshot LIU, 36-17, including 26-6 over the final 40 minutes.
  • The Buckeyes were 1-for-6 on the power play in the game and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

  • Thiesing had the Buckeyes’ first hat trick since Quinn Preston scored three times against Notre Dame Jan. 15.
  • The game was Thiesing’s first collegiate multiple-goal game. He entered the game with three goals this season.
  • Wise had his first career three-assist game and third three-point night as a Buckeye.
  • Wise, who has a point in 10 of the last 11 games, leads Ohio State with 17 points. Lohrei has a team-best 11 assists. Wise, Guzzo, Thiesing and Davis Burnside share the team goal lead with six each.
  • Wise was playing in his 100th collegiate game. Goalie Jakub Dobes made the 50th start of his collegiate career.
  • The Buckeyes are 59-for-63 (.921) on the penalty kill this season. The power play is 15-for-67 (.224).
