Ramapo’s ice hockey team had a disappointing showing at the Upstate New York Collegiate Hockey League (UNYCHL) Invitational at Elmira last weekend, dropping two of the three games they played in the tournament.

The first was on Friday night against Binghamton University, where the Roadrunners fell 8-7 in overtime. Ramapo got off to a hot start with goals from senior Trent Shanley and alternate captain Rory Maurer, each scoring in the first 10 minutes of the first period, giving Ramapo a 2-0 lead. Shanley and Maurer also recorded the only assists on each other’s goals.

Binghamton fired back, however, scoring three goals in the final 10 minutes of the period. Matthew Usinski scored the first goal of the night for Binghamton, assisted by Hugh White. Usinski scored again three minutes later on a power play goal, assisted by Christopher Simak. Simak then scored the third and final goal of the period for Binghamton on a shorthanded opportunity.

In the second period, Ramapo scored two power play goals in the first three minutes to retake the lead. Maurer scored the first of the two off an assist from Shanley, and senior Peter Paszkiel scored the second off an assist from captain Eddie Dahdah. Similar to the first period, however, Binghamton responded by scoring three straight goals. Simak scored twice, giving him a hat trick in two periods. Owen Rowell scored the other goal, and Usinski recorded assists on all three second-period goals.

In the third period, Ramapo evened the playing field with two goals from junior Thomas Moskal, with Maurer and Rick Kimble recording assists. Shanley also tallied his second goal of the game off an assist from Maurer. Binghamton’s lone goal of the third period came from Simak off an assist from Usinski.

In the final seconds of overtime, Binghamton’s Simak recorded his fifth goal of the night off assists from Usinski and Jack O’Bryan, giving the Roadrunners their first loss of the UNYCHL Invitational.

Ramapo’s second game of the tournament came on Saturday morning against St. Bonaventure University, where the Roadrunners fell 8-2.

The first two goals of the game came off the sticks of Roadrunners, with Shanley and Dahdah each scoring in the first period off assists from Paszkiel and Kimble. From that point on, however, the Bonnies dominated the match.

Brady Fitzpatrick scored in the closing minutes of the first period for St. Bonaventure off assists from Owen Hughes and Michael Robertson. In the second period, the Bonnies recorded two goals from Tyler Kelley, one from Michael Clouden and one from Robertson. Fitzpatrick, Hughes, Mitchell Marsh, Carson Schlager and Mason Meggo each recorded assists in the second period.

In the third period, St. Bonaventure added their final three goals of the game, with two coming from Kelley, giving him four total on the day. The other came courtesy of Hughes, his second of the day. Fitzpatrick, Marsh, Schlager, Cody Bauer and Jake Spina each recorded assists in the final period.

On Sunday morning, Ramapo recorded their only win of the UNYCHL Invitational with a dominating performance over Cornell University. Ramapo recorded four goals in the first period, two of which were scored by Dahdah, one from Moskal and one from Maurer. Denis Brown recorded the only goal of the period for Cornell off an assist from Aidan Cobb. Recording assists for Ramapo were Shanley, Kimble, Moskal and Matthew Curattalo.

In the second period, Dahdah and Moskal each recorded goals for the Roadrunners while Luke Kratsios scored for Cornell. Shanley, Curattalo and Alex Cohen tallied assists for Ramapo, and Matthew Weinstein and Sebastian Alvarez assisted on Kratsios’ goal.

In the third and final period of the tournament for the Roadrunners, Dahdah and Weinstein exchanged goals, leading to a 7-3 final score.

For Ramapo, Denis McGarry started all three games in net, and Paul Fiorello recorded just over 20 minutes of action throughout the weekend.

Ramapo’s next game comes on Friday, Dec. 2 at Fairfield University in Shelton, Connecticut. Ramapo plays again on Saturday, Dec 3 at home against Quinnipiac University at the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne.
