Men’s Hockey Heads to LIU for Weekend Series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (3-7-1, 1-6-1 ECAC) hit the road to take on the LIU Sharks (3-9-1, Independent) in a weekend series at Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, New York.
 
The Bears and Sharks will square off at 8 p.m. on Saturday before closing the weekend series at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will stream on ESPN+ in the United States and through NEC FrontRow internationally.
 
SCOUTING THE BEARS

  • Brown enters the weekend with a 3-7-1 overall record after taking wins over Holy Cross and Providence last weekend and falling, 4-2, at home to Boston College last Tuesday.
  • Freshman Ryan Bottrill leads the team with three goals and seven points through 11 games. A trio of Bears – Bottrill, Cole Quisenberry, and Jordan Tonelli – lead the team with four assists.
  • Thirteen Bears have multiple points to this point of the season.
  • Sophomore Mathieu Caron, the reigning ECAC Goaltender of the Week, has started all 11 games between the pipes and holds a 2.44 goals against average and .925 save percentage. His save percentage ranks fourth in the ECAC and 15th in the NCAA.
  • Brown’s power play has five goals in 32 attempts (15.6%) to rank eighth in the conference. Brown’s penalty kill clicks at 74.5%.

SCOUTING THE SHARKS

  • LIU enters the weekend with a 3-9-1 overall record. The Sharks are one of six Independent programs in Division I men’s hockey programs in the country.
  • The Sharks hold Division I wins over Stonehill and 12th-ranked Ohio State and another win over Division II Assumption. LIU tied seventh-ranked Quinnipiac, 2-2, early in the season.
  • The Sharks have also played weekend series against Michigan State, Omaha, and Wisconsin.
  • Anthony Vincent, a graduate transfer from Holy Cross, leads the Sharks in goals (8), assists (6), points (14), and shots (45). Adam Goodsir, a graduate transfer from Michigan State, ranks second on the team in goals (6) and points (9).
  • LIU has seven players who played Division I hockey elsewhere and one Division III transfer on the roster.
  • Between the pipes, Boston University transfer Vinnie Purpura has started 12 games. He holds a 3.18 goals against average and .903 save percentage.
  • LIU’s power play has scored seven goals in 59 attempts (11.9%) to rank 53rd in the nation. LIU’s penalty kill ranks 38th in the nation with 12 goals against in 58 attempts (79.3%).

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Brown and LIU meet for the second and third times in series history this weekend in East Meadow, New York.
  • The Sharks took the series-opening win last January at Meehan Auditorium as Billy Jerry recorded a hat trick in the win.

TUESDAY NIGHT, TONIGHT

  • Brown enters the weekend after welcoming the Boston College Eagles to Meehan for a mid-week contest last Tuesday (Nov. 29).
  • The Bears and Eagles combined for four goals in the final two minutes of the game as BC took a 4-2 win, buoyed by two empty-net goals from Nikita Nesterenko.
  • Gavin Puskar and Brett Bliss both scored their second goals of the season in the loss.
  • Mathieu Caron recorded 25 saves while allowing just two goals in the loss. 

HEATING UP

  • Junior Jordan Tonelli and Bottrill enter the weekend with three-game point streaks.
  • Tonelli has picked up an assist in each of the last three games and is tied for the team-lead with four this season.
  • Bottrill scored a goal against Holy Cross and Providence and added an assist against BC for his three-game point streak.
