After a brief return to the road, on which Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin scored his 800th career goal to complete a hat trick against the Chicago Blackhawks on December 13, Capitals faithful finally got their chance to honor their beloved captain’s historic accomplishment, with help from a special guest.

Early in the first period of the Caps’ Thursday night game against the Dallas Stars, the Capital One Arena crowd gave The Great Eight a standing ovation as the countdown banner installed among the seats was turned to 800 by mascat Slapshot and Ovechkin’s oldest son Sergei (aka Ovi Jr), with Alex’s wife Nastya watching close by.

The arena, unsurprisingly, showered their captain with a standing ovation.

Ovechkin is one goal shy of tying Gordie Howe for second all-time in Goals Scored, and two shy of taking sole possession of second, with only Wayne Gretzky’s 894 goals left to skate down.
