W.E.B. boys hockey plays tribute game in memory of Laurie Dewhurst

ROCKLAND — For many years, Laurie Dewhurst invested time and effort to support East Bridgewater High athletics — even as some of her kids grew up and graduated from participating in the programs themselves.

So Tuesday night, nearly one year since Dewhurst lost a four-year bout with breast cancer, the West/East Bridgewater boys hockey team opted to do its part in repaying the favor by hosting the “Team Dewey Tribute Game” against Pembroke at Rockland Ice Rink.

“Because she was such a special person to the community, the programs at the schools, they’ve done so much. The hockey team felt if we were going to do an endowment game, which we were excited about doing, let’s do it for a good reason and a good cause,” W.E.B. head coach Mike D’Errico said. “And what better reason than a great person like that?”

With players wearing pink accents (the color of breast cancer awareness) on their uniforms and hardly a seat to be found in the bleachers, the community support was felt all throughout the Vikings’ 3-2 loss, though the endowment game doesn’t count towards either team’s official record.

Dewhurst, a Bridgewater native, built a reputation by working the snack shacks at the Vikings’ baseball, football and basketball games. Last week, the indoor concession stand at East Bridgewater High was renamed in her honor. Her oldest son, Luke, 24, said that she would even attend sporting events when treatment permitted before her passing on Jan. 12. She was 51.

“She volunteered whenever she could,” Luke Dewhurst said. “It definitely showed us a big sense of pride and toughness. She would go to sporting events when she was almost too tired to get up some days. She would put that first. It’s hard to watch that and not have a sense of pride.”
