A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s (9-6-2, 5-2-1 MIAC) split its final non-conference games of the regular season last weekend.

Wisconsin-Stout 3, at Saint John’s 1 (Jan. 13)

Wisconsin-Stout rode its special teams to a 3-1 win over Saint John’s hockey on Friday afternoon, Jan. 13, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Stout scored two power-play goals and a shorthanded tally against SJU, which posted a 32-23 advantage in shots.

Jacob Halvorson gave Stout an early 1-0 lead on a power-play goal, his 10th tally of the season, 4:20 into the game. SJU outshot the Blue Devils in the opening period, 12-8, and had scoring multiple opportunities. Sophomore forward Jackson Sabo (Rosemount, Minn.) was denied on two point-blank chances, one following a bad defensive-zone turnover by Stout and the other on a breakaway, and freshman defenseman Zach Enebak (Lakeville, Minn.) hit the pipe. Sabo also hit the pipe in the second period.

Senior forward Nick Michel (Waconia, Minn.) tied the game with his team-leading 12th goal of the season 1:09 into the second period when he deflected a shot from Enebak to the back of the net.

The Blue Devils, however, regained the lead on another power-play goal – with two seconds remaining in the man advantage – from Gunner Moore 4:18 later. Dylan Rallis sealed the win for Stout on a shorthanded goal with 6:37 remaining in regulation.

Freshman goaltender Jon Howe (Chanhassen, Minn.) made his sixth collegiate start and stopped 20 shots in the defeat.

The Blue Devils finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while SJU registered only one shot on goal across three opportunities with the man advantage.

Saint John’s 3, No. 10 Wisconsin-Stevens Point 2 (Jan. 14)

SJU returned to the win column in a big way with a 3-2 victory over No. 10 Wisconsin-Stevens Point last Saturday (Jan. 14) at Bernicks Arena in Sartell.

Sophomore goaltender Bailey Huber (Mahtomedi, Minn.) made a career-high 41 saves and a pair of Johnnies scored their first goals of the season in the victory, which snapped a nine-game winless streak for SJU in the series. The Johnnies’ last win over the Pointers occurred Nov. 2, 2007, in Stevens Point, Wis. (a 5-3 score).

Senior defenseman Peter Tabor (Edina, Minn.) gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season 4:23 into the game, but Mick Heneghan tied it for UWSP on a power-play tally with 4:59 left in the frame.

Sophomore forward Spencer Rudrud (Eden Prairie, Minn.) gave the lead back to the Johnnies with the lone goal of the second period 8:52 in, his first tally of the season, on a one-timer directly off a faceoff win from Sabo.

Senior forward Jack Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.) padded the lead with what proved to be the game-winning goal – his first goal of the season and 15th of his career – at the 11:51 mark of the third period on a nice cross-ice feed from Michel.

Fletcher Anderson cut the Pointers’ deficit to one 38 seconds later, but the visitors could not find the equalizer with the goaltender pulled for the game’s final two minutes.

SJU went 0-for-5 on the power play, including a pair of 5-on-3 advantages: for 1:40 late in the first period and another for a duration of 1:47 in the second.

MIAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Huber was named the MIAC Men’s Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday (Jan. 16) for his performance in Saturday night’s win over No. 10 UWSP. The victory came after he posted both wins in net, a 0.50 GAA and a .967 save percentage (29 saves) in the Jan. 6-7 sweep of Gustavus Adolphus. Huber touts a 7-2-2 record and leads the MIAC in both GAA (1.44) and save percentage (.945) this season.
