Penalties Plague Polar Bears as Panthers Beat Men’s Hockey

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Middlebury men’s hockey team earned its third win of the season after capitalizing on Bowdoin penalties in a 3-2 final in Watson Arena.
 
The Polar Bears are 10-5-1 on the season with a 5-5-1 NESCAC record. The Panthers picked up their second conference victory of the year (3-13-0, 2-8-0 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin jumped out to a 1-0 lead 4:37 into the game on the team’s first power play opportunity. Luke Wheeler took a shot from the left side and the deflection kicked to Patrick Callahan. Callahan poked the puck to Andy Stoneman on the right post for the goal.
  • The Polar Bears survived a five minute penalty kill, but the Panthers converted seconds after the penalty expired. Billy Dobensky fired a shot from the right point that Andrej Hromic deflected up and over to Zach Whitehead. Whitehead finished off the play on the near post.
  • The Panthers earned another five minute power play and put away two more goals. Cole Joslin passed from the right boards to Matt Myers below the goal line. Myers passed up to Paddy Bogart in front of the crease for tic-tac-toe completion to go ahead 2-1.
  • Middlebury extended its lead as Joslin made a cross ice pass from the left to Hromic on the edge of the right circle for a one-timer.
  • The Polar Bears got a goal back midway through the final frame. Will Forrest slid a pass to Stoneman who carried center. Stoneman fired a shot toward net that Jack Studley deflected in to make it 3-2.
  • Bowdoin pulled Kozic with three and half minutes remaining to put offensive pressure on the Panthers. Despite peppering Middlebury with shots, Bowdoin was unable to find an equalizer.

 
By the Numbers

  • Bowdoin scored one power play goal. The Panthers converted twice during a five minute major.
  • Kozic made 22 saves for Bowdoin.
  • Jake Horoho made 27 stops for Middlebury.
