CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore forward Matthew Coronato scored a pair of goals, junior forward Sean Farrell notched a career high four assists, and senior goaltender Mitchell Gibson made 31 saves to lead No. 10/10 Harvard men’s ice hockey (15-5-1, 13-3-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 6-2 win over Cornell (13-7-1, 10-4-0 ECAC Hockey).

Henry Thrun, John Farinacci, Ryan Siedem, and Alex Laferriere each had a goal and an assist to help the Crimson improve to 3-0-2 in its last five games against Cornell.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Though Cornell struck first on a tip in by Ondrej Psenicka at 12:25, Harvard responded with four straight goals to take control of the game.

Just two minutes after the Big Red goal, Coronato deflected a shot by Farrell past Cornell goaltender Ian Shane (23 saves) to tie the game at 14:29.

Three goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second period helped Harvard separate from Cornell.

The first of the three came just seconds into the frame, as a seeing eye wrist shot from senior captain Henry Thrun beat Shane on the short side at :36 to give Harvard its first lead of the night.

Just over two minutes later, Coronato scored his second of the night on a 2-on-1 break with Farrell, who fed cross-ice at the perfect time, setting up Coronato’s wrist shot from the right circle at 3:10.

Then it was Harvard’s power play that helped the Crimson take a three goal lead. Farrell set up junior forward Alex Laferriere for a one-timer in front that deflected off Farinacci, then off Shane and into the net at 6:49 to make it 4-1.

Cornell’s Sam Malinski cut the Harvard lead back to two at 13:09 of the middle frame, but Gibson prevented the Big Red from getting any closer, making 13 saves in the period.

In the third period, Laferriere took a pass from Miller in the high slot and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Shane off the rush at 12:17 to make it 5-2. Siedem added an empty net goal in the final minute to seal the win.
