NFL Super Bowl – The San Francisco 49ers are expected to hire former Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks as their next defensive coordinator, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Wilks served as the defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach for the Panthers in 2022. He was appointed interim head coach after the team fired Matt Rhule on October 10. After taking over, Wilks’ Panthers went 6-5 in their next 11 games. From Weeks 10-18, Carolina’s defense ranked 17th in DVOA.
The 49ers are hiring Wilks after defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans accepted a head coaching role with the Houston Texans. Under Ryans, San Francisco’s defense led the league in DVOA, up from a seventh-best finish in 2021.
