The departures of forward Garnet Hathaway and defenseman Dmitry Orlov in a trade to the Boston Bruins on February 23 was a reality check to not only the Washington Capitals’ current position in the standings, but also a reminder of the business side of the NHL. While the two players will be missed in Washington and will soon don the iconic “B”, both made time to tap their sticks to the Caps and the city of D.C..

In a post to Instagram, Orlov, who was drafted by the Capitals in the second-round of the 2009 and spent over a decade in the organization, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the team, city, and fans.

“I never thought this time would come…it’s really hard to leave the team that drafted me and gave me the chance to play in the best league in the world…Washington was my family and my second home for 11 years…Thanks to all partners, organizations and of course the fans..I will never forget you…❤️”

Orlov played 686 Games as a member of the Capitals, recording 60 Goals, 196 Assists, and 256 Points, all which rank fourth (GP), ninth (G), eighth (A), and ninth (P) in franchise history, respectively among blueliners.

Hathaway, who signed with the team as a free agent in the summer of 2019 to a four-year contract, also took to social media to express his appreciation for his time in the District.

Hathaway, who grew up in Kennebunkport, Maine and was a Bruins fan as a child, appeared in 257 games with the Caps, recording 76 Points while helping anchor the team’s effective fourth-line. In addition to the snarl he brought on the ice, Hathaway was deeply involved in the community through his “Hath’s Heroes” initiative with first responders.

The Bruins announced that the two former Capitals will wear Nos. 21 (Hathaway) and 81 (Orlov’s original number in Washington) upon taking the ice with their new club.
