Photo: TSNAccording to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the New Jersey Devils acquired left-wing Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks on Sunday evening. The 26-year-old can become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights on July 1 and requires a qualifying offer of at least $9 million.

There is no contract extension for Meier as part of the transaction even though the parties have discussed it.
San Jose will retain 50% of Meier’s $6 million cap hit for the rest of the season.
New Jersey also acquired defenseman Scott Harrington, who carries an $800,000 cap charge for the rest of the season before being eligible for unrestricted free agency in July.
According to The Athletic, San Jose will acquire left-wing Fabian Zetterlund, New Jersey’s 2023 and 2024 first-round picks, left-wing Andreas Johnsson, defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin, and defenseman Nikita Okhotiuk in the deal. New Jersey also received forward Santeri Hatakka, goaltender Zachary Emond, and a fifth-round pick (originally Colorado’s selection) in the 2024 NHL Draft.
Meier led San Jose with 31 goals and ranked second with 52 points in 57 games this season.

Meier has recorded at least 30 goals in a campaign three times in his six-season NHL career, including a 35-goal and career-high 76-point output in 77 games last season.
In 451 career NHL games, all with San Jose, the ninth overall pick from the 2015 NHL Draft has earned 154 goals and 316 points.
New Jersey only improves an offense that ranks fifth in the NHL with 3.51 goals-per-game and a power play that is 20.5% efficient (19th). Meier has averaged 2:59 on the power play this season, which leads all San Jose forwards.
New Jersey trails the Carolina Hurricanes, who have a game in hand, for first place in the Metropolitan Division by three points.
Carolina, the Vegas Golden Knights, and Winnipeg Jets were among the other teams in the sweepstakes for Meier.

While averaging 15:18 per game (seventh among San Jose defensemen), including 46 seconds on the penalty kill (sixth) in 28 outings this season, Harrington, 29, has one goal, seven points, a -7 rating, 46.56% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, 52.09% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and 50.33% five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage.
In 238 career games with San Jose, the Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Pittsburgh Penguins, Harrington has eight goals, 45 points, and a -18 rating.
New Jersey further deepens their blueline, which is tied for fourth with an average of 2.63 goals-against per game and tied for 10th with an 81.5% penalty-killing efficiency.
Zetterlund, 23, has nine goals (six in 45 games this season) and 28 points (20) in 59 career NHL games over the past two seasons. He was taken 63rd overall in the 2017 NHL Draft.
Johnsson, 28, has played in only two NHL games this season and has 48 goals and 116 points in 248 career outings with New Jersey and Toronto. He also has nine goals and 29 points in 36 AHL games in 2022-23.
Okhotiuk, 22, has two goals, three points, and a -1 rating in 15 career NHL games over the past two seasons, including a goal and +1 rating in 10 this season. The 61st overall pick from 2019 also has two goals, four points, and an even rating in 20 AHL games this season.
Mukhamadullin, 21, has six goals, 25 points, and a +16 rating in 67 KHL games this season. He was New Jersey’s 20th overall pick from the 2020 NHL Draft.
Hatakka has two assists in eight games with the San Jose Barracuda (AHL) this season. He skated in nine games with the parent club last year, for his first taste of NHL action.
Ibragimov spent this season in Wichita (ECHL) where he notched 11 goals and 21 assists for 32 points in 52 games.
Emond has played four games in Wichita, going 3-1-0 with a 2.22 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage.
The 2023 NHL Trade Deadline is set for Friday at 3 PM ET.
