Josh Dobbs Signing With Cleveland Browns, Per Agent

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Josh Dobbs has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, per his agent Mike McCartney, kicking off a second stint in Cleveland. Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

It’s worth $2 million, fully guaranteed, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Dobbs was a fourth-round pick by the Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft, but in two stints in Pittsburgh, he failed to start a game. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fifth-round pick during the 2020 NFL Draft, and after a season with Jacksonville, he was waived and claimed off waivers by the Steelers. After the Steelers failed to re-sign him, he signed a one-year deal with the Browns last offseason but was waived once quarterback Deshaun Watson returned from his suspension.

From there, Dobbs got the first real opportunity of his NFL career. Signed off Detroit Lions’ practice squad by the Tennessee Titans, Dobbs make his first NFL start against the Dallas Cowboys in an eventual Tennessee loss in Week 17. He was named the starter in a win-or-go-home Week 18 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite throwing for 179 yards and a touchdown, Dobbs was strip-sacked late in the game and the fumble was returned for a Jacksonville touchdown. They eventually beat the Titans 20-16.

Now, Dobbs is returning to Cleveland to provide depth behind Watson. Jacoby Brissett, who started 11 games while Watson was suspended, signed with the Washington Commanders last week. Cleveland was limited behind Watson with just former Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond on the roster. Dobbs should provide a veteran presence behind Watson, who didn’t look like his best self when he returned from suspension late last year. He also has dealt with injuries in the past, so bringing in a reliable backup in Dobbs is a good move by Cleveland.

While Dobbs didn’t get much of an opportunity during his first stint with the Browns, maybe his second stint will bring the sort of chance he found with the Titans last year. Dobbs is an easy guy to root for, so while it’s near impossible to root for Cleveland, it will be fun to watch Dobbs’ journey progress another year.
